Conscription in Belarus
A planned military conscription has just begun in Belarus. How many soldiers are expected to be dragged into service and where will they be assigned?
The announcement has been published by Belarus 24, a state television and radio channel of Belarus. The conscription began on April 23 and should last until the end of May. Around 10,000 people are expected to be conscripted in this period. Another 600 are planned to be conscripted for reserve service.
On the very first day of conscription, approximately 1,000 new recruits joined the military. They are to be assigned to special operations forces, the Minsk Military Commandant’s Office, and the 72nd Guards Joint Training Center. The first recruits will also be assigned to the 361st Security and Maintenance Base and Border Service. New conscripts will take their military oath on May 23.
Such moves and acts of mobilisation need to be monitored by the West, especially by the states of NATO’s eastern flank like Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia. Belarus, being realistically an extension of the Russian Federation, poses a threat to those states. Due to its linkage to Russia, Belarus keeps taking part in hybrid attacks against the flank.
