Israel-Lebanon talks
At the ambassadorial level, the first talks in more than 30 years between Israel and Lebanon have taken place. Both sides seem to agree on the Hezbollah issue.
The discussions were held between Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, and Lebanon’s Ambassador to the United States, Nada Hamadeh Moawad. “Today we discovered that we are on the same side of the equation. That is the most positive outcome we could have hoped for. I must say, this was a victory for common sense, responsibility, and peace because Hezbollah’s leader warned the Lebanese government yesterday against participating in these talks, and Prime Minister Joseph Aoun’s government courageously told Hezbollah ‘no,’” the Israeli ambassador said following the meeting.
The Israeli ambassador emphasised that the talks could be considered “the beginning of a very strong, determined, and consistent struggle against Hezbollah.” The Lebanese ambassador called for the “full implementation” of the ceasefire with Israel, as well as respect for Lebanon’s territorial sovereignty and the provision of humanitarian aid.
A ceasefire is currently in effect between Iran and the United States. Appeals have been made for the cessation of hostilities to apply to all parties involved in the conflict, but Israel continues its fight against Lebanon’s Hezbollah. In 2024, Lebanon and Israel signed an agreement to halt military operations on the condition that Hezbollah be disarmed by the Lebanese government and armed forces. So far, the Lebanese side has failed to achieve this goal.
Despite the historic nature of this diplomatic meeting, no significant changes in Lebanon are expected. For years, Hezbollah’s units have been stronger than Lebanon’s regular army. Currently, the organisation enjoys relative impunity and launches attacks against Israel from the southern part of the country.
