Ready-to-use: New U.S. combat asset depot in Australia
The U.S. Army plans to establish a ready-to-use military equipment depot in southeastern Australia. This would be the first such facility on the country’s territory, located beyond the reach of potential attacks from China.

The United States deploys weapons depots in various locations worldwide. Such equipment can be utilised immediately, for instance, by the Marine Corps. These depots house weapons, ammunition, and combat vehicles capable of supporting thousands of troops in battle. The first American ground-based depot in the Asia-Pacific region is set to be established this year in the Philippines. It will be situated in a strategic location near potential flashpoints in the South China Sea.
A larger depot is to be built in Australia. Initially, military stocks are to be stored in Melbourne; next year, following the completion of the facility, they will be transported to an Australian military base near the city of Wodonga. The depot is expected to reach full storage capacity in 2028.
By government decision, foreign military bases are not built in Australia. However, Canberra has entered into an alliance agreement with Washington, under which it hosts an increasing number of American troops at Australian bases. Furthermore, approximately 2,000 U.S. soldiers are currently training in Darwin, in northeastern Australia.
According to the tender document, the U.S. Marine Corps is seeking a global security service provider to recruit approximately 110 engineers, mechanics, and specialists to work at the depot. It was added that the facility is to house “heavy weapons.”
Due to China’s growing role and military potential, the importance of the Indo-Pacific region is increasing. The deployment of American bases and depots in the region allows for efficient power projection in the event of a threat from China. China claims exclusive rights to Taiwan and most of the South China Sea.
