China and North Korea are entering a “new phase of cooperation”
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Pyongyang. During Xi’s first visit to the North Korean capital in seven years, the leaders reached a political agreement aimed at raising mutual relations to a „new level.”
It is worth noting that the meeting between the two leaders takes place 65 years after China and North Korea entered into the bilateralTreaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance. Interestingly, the document signed in Beijing in 1961 remains China’s only official mutual defense treaty.
Little is known regarding the details of the new agreement. Information provided by the North Korean news agency KCNA indicates that the deal between Beijing and Pyongyang involves deepening strategic communication (confirming more frequent meetings of high-level officials).
However, the lack of specific details within the document does not mean that the meeting did not yield several noteworthy developments. Importantly, during the meeting, Kim Jong Un explicitly supported the „One China” policy, which was a clear reference to the situation in Taiwan.
Official communiqués did not confirm, however, whether the leaders discussed Pyongyang’s nuclear program or relations with the United States. It is worth recalling that China remains North Korea’s largest trading partner.
