On Wednesday, 15th October, on the basis of the data gathered by the Polish Military Counterintelligence Service, an officer of the Polish army has been arrested, he was suspected of working for foreign intelligence services – this is what MoD spokesperson, Col. Jacek Sońta, has said. According to the information released by TVN24 the officer who was arrested had had access to a lot of information. He was suspected of working for the Russians. Radio ZET complemented the information with the fact that the officer was a Colonel who worked on the issues related to the IT systems use in the Armed Forces.
MoD spokesperson additionally said that the arrest has been made by the Internal Security Agency on the basis of materials gathered by the Polish Military Counterintelligence Service. Colonel Sońta stated that the proceedings are being carried out by the Military Counterintelligence, but the relevant act does not provide arrest warranty. Radio ZET states that the officer was charged with participation in foreign intelligence activities against the Republic of Poland. This act may be punished with 10 years of imprisonment. Additionally the person in question also faced charges of providing information to foreign intelligence services – here the punishment is at least 3 year imprisonment.
As TVN 24 stated, the Internal Security Agency has arrested another person – a lawyer working at one of the Warsaw chancelleries, who has been suspected of collaborating with the Russian GRU Military Intelligence Agency. The case is handled by the Appellate Public Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw. According to the unofficial information obtained by TVN24 the arrests are not connected to one another but in both cases they are related to activity beneficial for the Russian intelligence. The Radio ZET reports state that the lawyer, who has double Polish-Russian citizenship, faced charges of participating in foreign intelligence activities against the Republic of Poland. He had been observed by the Internal Security Earlier, as Radio Zet stated.
According to Radio Zet the prosecutors will apply for temporary arrest of both suspects.
